I find it to run games somewhat faster, or about 21-26% then in Gnome or KDE.
for those who do not know = Log out > Seisons > and chose "Fail safe Terminal"
Then execute the game with the Terminal.

20% or so seem like a great deal more then I can belive. Though I don't know your system specs and or what other processes you are running that could eat up resources or what games you are playing.
I only see a 5 frame per second improvement playing games across the board (UT,UT2004,Q4,D3 ect) playing games either with no Window Manager or in Failsafe. For UT2004 my umark score is 70 in KDE and with no window manager 73 but I have noticed that over many benchmarks about 10 in each scenario it is more in the range of 69 with window manager and 70 in KDE
I would say if you have a good video card and a good amount of RAM, there are probably some proc running that are slowing things down. Not saying that you won't get beter fps in failsafe but I think it depends mostly on your system and what proc you are running.
Sys Spec
Motherboard: ABIT KV8
RAM: 1 GB
Video Card: 6800 GT
Edit Sorry double post.
