I was given this Dell PC, has ubuntu software 13.04, works well,can not sign in, to get updates. The person whom gave it to me does not remember, the administrator/password. Please assist, as I am new to this system.

How do you know it works well if you cannot login ?
How do we know this is your machine ?
13.04 is EOL (End of Life), you should reinstall a supported release. 14.04 has Long Term Support.

It's possible to reset the password, but this won't help you getting updates. 13.04 is no longer supported. So we're talking about a computer with an outdated OS, an unknown and therefore not to be trusted history and current status, on which you haven't stored any files or done any configuration yet. Better to wipe the hard drive and do a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Installing Ubuntu is not difficult. It's how most of us started. Not me, BTW.
