@kc1di if you were in my situation......would you 1st install on the Sony desktop T2400 or Dell XPS laptop T7200 and why?

    Thanks.

If you want swap, you don't need to do anything but carve out a piece and tell the installer to use it as swap.

So, "/", "/home" (not "/Home") and a swap partition, if you want one.

The 2x RAM for swap is very old school, but it still may be useful for a system with < 4GB of memory. Even then, 1.1 -1.25x RAM is fine. Any more than that is probably a waste of space. You will need at least 1.1x RAM if you intend to hibernate because you must be able to save the entire state of the RAM.

Appreciate your expert input. 1.1-1.25 is fine, but have ample space 320 GB for Ubuntu only.

Same question, should I install it on desktop or laptop 1st?

    Thanks.

It really would not matter. I think I'd choose the Laptop in your case. but that really is not based on much

There are as many opinions on partitioning as there are Linux users. I'd say that on a 320GB drive 8GB (2.5% of the disk space) is not going to make any difference. So it doesn't matter when you make your root partition or any other partition a few GB larger than really necessary. 10GB should be enough for a root partition, but to be on the safe side, make it 15 or even 20. Having some extra space on the root partition is sometimes handy. Extra space on swap serves no purpose. Using large amounts of swap (large relative to the hard drive write speed) makes the computer very slow.

As to which computer to convert first, it depends on how you use them. If you want to use Ubuntu for everything except the few things that you really cannot do on Linux, then first convert the most powerful computer. If Windows is to remain the main system until you know your way in Ubuntu, first convert the weakest machine. But if you don't make Ubuntu your main system, it may take a very long time to get comfortable with it.

Thanks for posting your expert opinion. Shall make root 20 GB, swap 4 GB rest to home.

I want Ubuntu to be my main system so shall install it on the T7200 system to take full advantage of 64 bit.

The reason for having Windows is that most users over the globe still use it........so need apps like Skype, MS Off, Foxit........since the last time way back in 2008 had compatibility issues.
