If there is nothing to be seen, there is nothing - we need to put a file system on that drive so it is seen.I haven't done anything to it, I haven't ever formatted it, I just installed Ubuntu on an SSD and the hard drive wouldn't show up.
What file system do you want ?
If only ubuntu is to be installed to that box, ext4 is a good choice
For sharing the drive between ubuntu and Windows, NTFS is a good choice.

While GParted is versatile and will handle the job ->
Windows' tools for Windows systems
ubuntu tools for ubuntu systems .
