why is it that native linux games (quake 4 and enemy territory) dont let you alt-tab to switch programs but games run under wine do? its incredibly annoying to have to leave a game because you need to check something on msn. does anyone know how to minmise these games.

I've been asking myself the same thing!

Have you tried running multiple desktops and defining a hot-key combo to switch desktops?

I use this and it comes in handy for checking IMs/ webpages/ et al. when I play WoW (which isn't a native game, granted, but surely the logic is the same?)

    I have ctrl+f1/ f2/ f3 to switch and it works a treat.
