trouble compiling opencv

Hi,

I'm currently trying to install opencv-3.0.0 on ubuntu 14.04 as per these instructions:

Everything works fine until I have to run the make command. It gets to around 33% done and then my computer crashes.
I'm new to ubuntu and don't really know how to go about troubleshooting this problem. I'm assuming it's got something to do with the hardware I'm using and not necessarily the os. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you suspect hardware limitations, it might be useful to share your hardware specs

FWIW your link appears to be about installing OpenCV 2.x on Ubuntu 10.04 - so pretty out of date (although in this case I don't think the basic procedure is very different)

I managed to get it compiled and installed through a virtual terminal, but I'd still like to know why it crashes in the x terminal.
I'm running ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 531:

Processor Family: AMD Athlon 64 X2

Processor Name: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+

Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz

RAM: 2 GB
