    DMB election results

    Stephane Graber announces the results of the Developer Membership Board [DMB] election which sees Benjamin Drung leaving the board and Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre taking his seat. He thanks Benjamin his years of good service and welcomes Mathieu as its latest member.

    Michael Hall: My SCaLE 13x and UbuCon review

    Michael Hall writes a summary of the recent UbuCon at the Southern California Linux Expo organized by Richard Gaskin, which included talks from Jorge Castro, Marco Ceppi, Philip Ballew, and both Michael and Richard themselves. Talks were recorded and Michael provides a YouTube link. He goes on to thank volunteers at the Ubuntu booth: Luis Caballero, Matt Mootz, Jose Antonio Rey, Nathan Haines, Ian Santopietro, George Mulak, and Daniel Gimpelevich. Hardware at the booth throughout the weekend included 3 laptops lent by System76, 2 Nexus 4 phones running Ubuntu, Stuart Langridge's personal, first-edition Bq Ubuntu phone, an Orange Box, and a TierraTek fanless PC and NAS.

    Randall Ross: On Writing Software for OpenPOWER

    Randall Ross writes that the first OpenPOWER Summit will soon be taking place [March 17-19] in San Jose, California. He invites those attending and who write, or are thinking about writing software for OpenPOWER, to a session entitled "ISV Roundtable."

    Daniel Holbach: Giving Ubuntu devices users a head-start

    Daniel Holbach shares a todo list from work he's been doing with colleagues Nick and David on a new app/website which seeks to "easily collect information which will give users of an Ubuntu device a head-start" including tips, tricks and FAQ. He invites community members to contribute to the content, translations and code for this project, providing links to some open bugs and more.

    Announce: Vivid will switch to booting with systemd next Monday, brace for impact

    Martin Pitt announces the date to switch Ubuntu Vivid to boot with systemd instead of upstart as Monday, March 9th. He says that the switch will affect the desktop, server, cloud, all flavors but not Ubuntu Touch, and that if there are too many regressions there is a simple upload to revert to upstart.

    Interview with Michael Hall (mhall119) of the Ubuntu Community Council

    In the fourth interview of the series, Community Council Member Michael Hall briefly talks about his career, his first computing experience, and his involvement with Ubuntu community. He says: "I've met people through the community that I am and will remain friends with outside of it. Some of them are like family to me now."

    Kubuntu Docs 15.04

    Huge Downloads for Ubuntu Kylin 14.04LTS, First OEM Partner Announced

    Canonical reports that there were 3 million downloads of Ubuntu Kylin in the first 12 months, and there have been an additional million downloads of Ubuntu Kylin 14.04 LTS. Additionally, HP has partnered with Canonical to sell Ubuntu Kylin preloaded on HP devices in stores.

    Dell launches Ubuntu loaded machines across 500 stores in Latin America

    Canonical announces that Dell computers with Ubuntu pre-installed will be sold in 500 stores across Latin America, and that consumers in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru will be now be able to more readily make a purchase from numerous local resellers.

    First peek at the next Ubuntu 15.04 nester line-up

    Scott Gilbertson, for The Register, reports on the flavors that he tested as part of the Beta 1 release of Ubuntu 15.04, noting that Ubuntu MATE is now an official flavor. He shows us some screenshots of the desktops, notes some of the important new features, and reminds us that Ubuntu 15.04 will be released on April 23rd.

    New Ubuntu Phone Separates the App from the Data

    Steve Rosenbush of The Wall Street Journal writes that the power of Ubuntu for mobile devices comes from the use of Scopes to display data where searches can narrow down what is being looked for without opening an application.

    Nvidia patches Ubuntu bug that caused black window screen crashes

    Lee Bell, writing for The Inquirer, tells us that Nvidia has fixed a bug in Ubuntu, which dated back to version 12.10, that was turning screens black for no apparent reason. They say that they fixed the bug, caused by Compiz, even though it wasn't their bug to fix.

    Linux 3.19 Officially Lands For Ubuntu 15.04

    Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes that recently announced by the Kernel Team is the inclusion of version 3.19 into the current development cycle for 15.04, and that with this release comes many new features and changes to the Linux Kernel.

    Popular German Website 'Spiegel Online' Reviews Ubuntu Phone

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! writes that German site "Spiegel Online" labels the Ubuntu Phone as being for hardcore Ubuntu/Linux fans, which is just who this first batch of devices is aimed at. Joey says that they did have some kind words about the smoothness of the UI and how good the color display is on the Aquaris E4.5.

    Ubuntu Cloud Switches Over To Using Systemd By Default

    Michael Larabel of Phoronix reports that the first images switching over to systemd from upstart are the Ubuntu Cloud images. He says that after this transition is over the Ubuntu Desktop image will receive the same change in time for the April release of Ubuntu 15.04.

    Shuttleworth says Ubuntu's future is more exciting than space travel

    Ben Woods of The Next Web writes that looking back Mark Shuttleworth thinks it may have been a mistake making a huge change to the Desktop with Unity without a phone or tablet to show off. He says that with both devices out in the wild in the form of the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2013, everyone can now see the grand plan.

    System76 unveils diminutive Broadwell-powered Meerkat Ubuntu Linux desktop

    Brian Fagioli of BetaNews writes about a new system coming in a very small 4x4 box and comes with with either an Intel core 5th gen i3 or i5 and 16GBs of RAM and up to a 2TB of space, the Broadwell-powered Meerkat Ubuntu.

    Brad Linder of Liliputing writes about another small computer running Ubuntu with 2GB of RAM and 4GB of eMMC storage with prices starting at $192, and a version costing $229 that includes a 32GB SSD.
