    Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS released

    Adam Conrad, on behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team, announces the release of Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS for Ubuntu as well as flavors that participate in the LTS process. 14.04.2 is a Hardware Enablement release that provides support for many new pieces of hardware, as well as all updates since 14.04 was released.     Ubuntu Membership Board call for nominations

    Elizabeth K. Joseph calls for Ubuntu Members who are interested in participating in the Ubuntu Membership Board. She says that the nominee requirements are Ubuntu Membership, ability to evaluate contributions to the community, and a willingness to attend board meetings. The deadline for nominations is Monday March 9th 12:00 UTC and may be submitted via email.

    Didier Roche: Ubuntu Make community releases 0.6 with 5 new supported platforms

    Didier Roche writes that the release of Ubuntu Make 0.6 was entirely backed by community participation. Didier praises Anton Antonov and Tin Tvrtkovic for excellent development and collaboration in the 0.6 release, which supports five new IDEs as well as zsh.

    Ubuntu, Hortonworks and Microsoft = Big Data Hosted Solution

    John Zannos discusses the Microsoft announcement that Azure HDInsight, Microsoft's Apache Hadoop-based service, will run on Ubuntu and what it means to DevOps teams. Zannos explains that when combining JuJu, the cloud orchestration tool, with Ubuntu and Azure, it will be easy for customers to evaluate big data fast.

    Canonical advise that the Alliance Technology Group expands their partnership to deliver Ubuntu based OpenStack clouds leveraging BootStack. Alliance also shared that they will participating as a Canonical training partner, delivering Ubuntu OpenStack fundamentals training.

    New Ubuntu OpenStack Fundamentals training sessions available

    Canonical announces the availability of the Ubuntu OpenStack Fundamentals Training programme which is designed for companies that have decided to use OpenStack. They say that the programme, which was created by Canonical's Engineering team, is an intensive 3-day hands-on course that will give the best introduction for setting up and running Ubuntu OpenStack clouds.

    Robert Ancell writes that he has written three new apps for the Ubuntu Phone which are Dice Roller, Morse Sender, and Yatzy. He shows us some screenshots of the apps, and links to an unofficial web appstore that can be used to browse for apps online with a PC.

    Canonical reports on the Ninja Sphere from Ninja Blocks, powered by Ubuntu Snappy Core. The Ninja Sphere allows users to control IoT devices using gesture control as well as smartphone apps. According to Daniel *Friedman*, the CEO of Ninja Blocks: "Ubuntu Core will allow Ninja Blocks to focus on creating a great connected home experience, and the Ninja Sphere will provide developers a beautiful, commercially available device to run their Snappy Ubuntu Core applications."

    GSMArena.com reports on Meizu teasing the public with the possibility of an Ubuntu based phone announcement at Mobile World Congress, along with an anticipated announcement around the release of the new Meizu MX4.

    Canonical Achieves Broad Industry Buy-In For Snappy Ubuntu

    Ben Kepes of Forbes informs us that Canonical has been aggressively pitching itself as the enabler for a world of Internet of Things (IoT) devices through "Snappy" Ubuntu Core. He names some of Canonical's new partners which include telco operators, network hardware vendors, and cloud vendors. He quotes Maarten Ectors of Canonical as saying that the Snappy solution "replaces thousands of fragmented kernels and very high maintenance costs with a low-cost reference platform certified across very large numbers of devices and updated regularly to address newly discovered issues"

    Joseph Tsidulko of CRN discusses the challenges around the talent gap in the OpenStack community, and how Canonical is helping to solve it with BootStack and by further educating and training the channel.

    Canonical partners with Amazon, Microsoft, and others on Internet of Things

    Steven J Vaughan-Nichols writing for ZDNet reports that Canonical has announced that both Microsoft and Amazon have agreed to publish their Internet of Things (IoT) application programming interfaces (APIs) on Ubuntu Core. He names some of Canonical's other partners and says: "To help turn the partnerships into products, Canonical also announced a program for silicon and board manufacturers to certify their platforms."

    Official Ubuntu Phone Porting Guide Published

    Silviu Stahie of Softpedia reports "Canonical has finally released the online Ubuntu Phone porting guide that should enable developers to get the Ubuntu Touch running on more devices out there that can easily support it." He says that a lot of projects have been put on hold because complete information wasn't available but that the community should now be able to come up with ports that feature Over-The-Air updates.

    Cut the Rope is the First Major Game Ported for Ubuntu Phone

    Silviu Stahie of Softpedia informs us that ZeptoLab has officially ported the famous "Cut the Rope" game for the Ubuntu platform and is now available in the store. He says porting games such as "Cut the Rope" is an easy procedure and the use of a different display server doesn't seem to be a problem for the porting process. He predicts that the store may be "flooded by official ports pretty soon."

    Ubuntu's foray into phones brings fresh approach

    Maha Shaikh of The Conversation looks at the first Ubuntu powered phone, the Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition, noting that only a fraction of the apps available to Apple and Android users are available for the device as it adopts a different approach to displaying information through its use of scopes. Maha asks a number of questions about how successful the phone will be, concluding: "Shuttleworth has played his hand; now we must see how others react."

    Unity 8 Continues Working Towards Proper Desktop Support

    Michael Larabel of Phoronix reports that Ubuntu developers have released new versions of Unity8 and Mir. He says new features for Unity8 include full shell rotation for mobile devices, desktop-oriented features like remembering window size and location, as well as bug fixes.

    Locally Integrated Menus (LIM) Set As Default In Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet

    Andrew of WebUpd8 informs us that the Locally Integrated Menu [LIM] will be the default in Ubuntu 15.04. He quotes the source of the news, provides some screenshots to show how LIMs work, and explains how to re-enable Global Menus.

    Mir Now Depends Upon C++14


    Michael Larabel of Phoronix reports that Ubuntu's Mir display server is moving onto C++14 which was released last December as a small update to C++11. He says that the switch to C++14 comes just days after the Mir 0.11 release.
