Kernel 4.0 RC (Release Candidate) series

kernel.org has just released 4.0RC1. I assume it will show up on the Ubuntu page soon.

@Zika: I was hoping we could try one thread for the whole RC series this time. What do you think?

Edit: By the way, I don't know why it is 4.0 instead of 3.20. As recently as Friday I saw git submissions for 3.20RC1

Edit 2: Seems to be running O.K., but haven't stressed it yet.

Maybe it's just my imagination, but it seems like I used to get some sort of mysterious udev error, or whatever, when plymouth was initially loading.

Then, the next line would contain some kind of an error or warning.

When I checked into it, months ago, the official answer was it had something to do with a kernel bug that didn't hurt anything, so the maintainers weren't in any hurry to fix it. They had more important things to spend their time fixing - blah, blah, blah.

I ignored it after that, but... I just noticed the warning/error is gone now in the 4.0-rc1 kernel.

Apparently, Linus ran a poll on G+.

So kernel will officially be called 4.0, and codenamed "Hurr durr I'ma sheep".

From the commit message:-

.. after extensive statistical analysis of my G+ polling, I've come to the inescapable conclusion that internet polls are bad.

Big surprise.

But "Hurr durr I'ma sheep" trounced "I like online polls" by a 62-to-38% margin, in a poll that people weren't even supposed to participate in. Who can argue with solid numbers like that? 5,796 votes from people who can't even follow the most basic directions?

In contrast, "v4.0" beat out "v3.20" by a slimmer margin of 56-to-44%, but with a total of 29,110 votes right now.

Now, arguably, that vote spread is only about 3,200 votes, which is less than the almost six thousand votes that the "please ignore" poll got, so it could be considered noise.

But hey, I asked, so I'll honor the votes.

I ignored it after that, but... I just noticed the warning/error is gone now in the 4.0-rc1 kernel.

That is interesting because right now on my default vivid kernel the error moved on from starting version 208 to starting version 209. So, there is progress somewhere but at what I have no idea.
