    Compaq Presario SR1123WM

moments ago I finished installing Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, runs slower than Windows XP

    1gb memory, 95% HDD Free & Celeron (P)330 2.66GHz 533MHz_FSB

Help? Do you offer a lighter version of Ubuntu?

installing Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS on a junk-yard PC was a test run - not impressive results with no known improvements

1GB RAM is very little for running modern operating systems.
2GB RAM should be the minimum, I recommend 4GB RAM.
Most machines have 2 RAM slots - consider to upgrade.
Windows XP is outdated and not a suitable comparison.

Lubuntu and Xubuntu are lightest versions and IMHO Lubuntu would probably be best with that amount of ram.

+1. In my opinion it would be best if you opt for Lubuntu.

ubuntu installation was into a junkyard PC- the mentioned PC maxes @ 1GB ( 2 x 512) it was an experiment before I would install on my desktops.

    Welcome. You can make that 2 x 512 into 2 x 1Gb. See this:

Maximum memory size is up to 2GB, 1GB per slot.
From HERE. DDR memory is cheap, if you can find some, or you might have some lying about (or a friend might). Good luck.
