Free Space 2 is Open Source and running in linux!!

I wrote a little digg with some links to other information sites. Be sure to read the first comment, since that is where the other links are!

I got this running over the weekend on my home Ubuntu (Dapper). I haven't installed all of the upgrades, but I have enough installed to be impressed. It plays great.

Just in case somone wants to try it out, I'll give a brief synopsis of what I did.

I basically followed the Free Space 2 Open Wiki

I have the actual Free Space 2 disks, so I extracted the files from the cd that way. After that, I got the source code from cvs. It seemed like the easiest way. i had no issues compiling (I did not perform anything other than the most basic compile.)

Fair warning. The information is spread out and hard to locate. So, use the forums, and ask questions.

Lemme know what you think of this.

    Just seconding the o.p.

Freespace 2 is one of the best space sims ever built.
I've played both the original version and the open one, which can add various graphics enhancements.

Don't miss this one people =D

Might be worth mentioning that there is a way to employ newtonian physics.

Note: I have not done this. This is what the forums lead me to beleive.

    Oh!!! Do I ever.
If this doesn't turn you on, then I don't know what will!!

    Battlestar Galactica Mod Teaser

The way I understand it, they are going to release this in a standalone version. So, it is still a mod, but it can be considered a game too.

I simply can not WAIT for this puppy to be released!!!!!!!!

Like the quake games (i think) you still need the original files.
