Annoying Sounds on Delete / Backspace

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 with Gnome Shell. I recently started using Nemo instead of Nautilus, I can't remember if I had this problem before or not. Anyway, whenever I delete a file or use backspace in gedit when there's no text to backspace (ie when I hold the key to remove some text and it reaches the start) I get an annoying sound. I'd like to disable this particular sound but not all sound affects.

Looks like Ubuntu uses themes rather than individual sounds. You could create a new theme which has a null sound for the one you want to turn off. See this tutorial on how to create a new theme:

It doesn't seem to be related to the sound themes, I changed it to a different theme with a different sound but the annoying alert stays the same sound as before.

Can you mute alert sounds as in unity.

Yes I have an on/off switch but it makes no difference, even when it's off I still get the sound.

What I suggested was to make a new theme, not use any of the existing ones. Then you can replace the annoying one with a new sound or no sound. It sounds like the annoying one is the same in all the existing themes.

The various themes all have different sounds (I tested them) but no matter which one I select I still get the original sound for the alerts. Anyway I did what you suggested and added a new theme without a sound file, selected it and same thing, still getting the original sound alert.
