Touchpad performance problems on Macbook Pro 11,2

I have been having issues with scrolling, and also the application switcher sometimes comes up when I don't want it to and didn't want it (I am aware of the multitouch gesture), and is very difficult to dismiss. It also almost never comes up if I actually try to use the gesture (three finger tap and hold, right?). One, two, and four finger taps all work fine.

I also have a problem that when scrolling it often selects text. I'm not sure exactly why.

    I'm using Ubuntu 14.04.

I figured out how to use the application switcher gesture (not that i really want to). But I still find it annoying that it doesn't immediately disappear after becoming inactive.
