    Gnome System Icons Missing

    I am running Ubuntu 14.04 x64.

    I installed gnome gnome-shell and gnome-desktop.

There should be system icons in the notification area but the aren't there. The Google-Chrome icon looks like a tiny red dot. The Private Internet Access icon doesn't show up at all and neither does Pidgin.

Is there some way to get Gnome to show system icons?

Do the icons appear in the Overview?

No, they don't. I found a Gnome extension called "Topicons" that puts them in the top bar. That actually works really well. I don't know what's wrong the the notification area at the bottom of the screen.
