Updater and apt-get issues.

As of a couple of days I have a red circle with a horizontal white line in my top (notification?) bar. If I click it, faint text says: "A problem occurred when checking for the updates". On other occasions I get something popping up in the launcher that tells me there is a problem with apt or apt-get. Lastly, I sometimes get a mid-screen error message that there is a system problem, If I ask for more info I get a brief flash that appears to say /usr/bin/aptd. I have no such directory or file. The closest I can come is /usr/bin/aptdcom. Opening that with gedit it talks about a demon, and I did once get an error that a demon had stopped or failed.

Where am I, and how do I fix it? It looks like something is wrong with apt and hence I cannot update anything, but how do I get it and install it if I don't have it? Isn't it what is used to get and install stuff?

Distro is 14.04 LTS on an HP with an MAD E-2 3200 APY

I tried quick reply and that blew up. Here are the results of the sudo apt-get commands. I note that my launch pad now shows the updater icon seemingly indicating that updates are ready. Once I post thsi I will try clicking that

I ran the updater from the launchpad and it installed several security updates, exited without seeming errors and told me that the software on the computer is now up to date. It appears that the manual operation of apt-get update and apt-get upgrade fixed whatever was wrong.
