Did you spill anything on the computer?
As promised the debug work continues!

If you look at the date and time this is after reboot.
The first line is me disconnecting the usb mouse

Re: hdd indicator led on continuously

Does the mouse work on other computers? If so, then the mouse is OK and there is something wrong with either the 5VDC power supply or the USB controller or the motherboard has developed an internal short that is causing those symptoms and the hard disk light.

Can you boot into Windows and determine if the hard disk light works OK?

    1. The mouse works when plugged in and unplugged when no longer needed. In other words, the short* only appears when the system has been idle for a period of time.
    2. I don't use dual boot, I've moved completely to linux. When I get refurbished systems, I have Kubuntu use the entire disk. I'm not a fan of Windows.

I'm beginning to think that this is a bug, because there is a battery led bug listed in the syslog.
I have about 12 systems here 32bit and 64bit, both 64bit have led bug issues.
The battery led issue indicates a discharging battery (when plugged-in), but the battery never runs out. It stays at 99% .
    Both 64bit systems are Gateway/Acer .
And there are no real performance issues.

Perhaps post the LED bug that you saw in syslog. I did not see it in any of the logs that you have posted so far.

Re: hdd indicator led on continuously

Here's a patch that provides that warning. http://www.serverphorums.com/read.php?12,828165

GHES is sort of explained: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143064

Re: hdd indicator led on continuously

Cover the LED with electrical tape.

Perhaps more helpful: look at the SATA options in BIOS. Try different options to see if the LED light behavior changes.
