    14.10 Freezes During Shutdown

    Hello guys,

    I've just upgraded to 14.10 almost flawlessly. Everything seems to work fine, execpt when I try to shutdown or restart the system which then becomes completely blocked:
    - no more mouse
    - no more access to keyboard
    - the CPU spikes in the background (I can tell from the noise made by the fan)

    BTW, I never had that issue with 14.04.

    Any insight?

    Re: 14.10 Freezes During Shutdown

    Either I'm the only one with this bug, which would indicate that it is linked with my hardware (MSI GE6O), or very few people have upgraded to 14.10.

    I have given up the possibility to report this bug on launchpad, due to the extreme complexity of reporting Ubuntu kernel bugs.

    Below are the contents of /var/log/syslog which are related to the exact moment of the shutdown and the beginning of the reboot process:

    If someone knows how to detect something unusual here, I'd be very glad to hear about it.

    I have also noticed a few recurring errors during bootup which may have an impact on shutdown (?):

    The last kernel update 3.16.0-24 has NOT solved this issue.

    Re: 14.10 Freezes During Shutdown

    I had the same problem after updating to 14.10 on my MSI GE40.
    But installing the proprietary drivers for nvidia fixed it for me.

    Thanks for the tip.
    However, the Nvidia driver available on the official repositories is so old...

    Re: 14.10 Freezes During Shutdown

    Been seeing intermittant system freezes on my GeForce GTX 660M/PCIe/SSE2 system but cannot attribute it to any action I was doing on the system at the time of the freeze. Looking at the last syslog activity and searching these bug report hit this bug because of the org.freedesktop.systemd1 references. These are the last two entries in syslog before the reboot entries.

    Nov 2 05:49:22 cliffps dbus[877]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.systemd1' (using servicehelper)
    Nov 2 05:49:22 cliffps dbus[877]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.systemd1'

    Running the lastest Nvidia drivers version 331.89 from Nivida-331-updates.

    Re: 14.10 Freezes During Shutdown

    You're suggesting that systemd might be responsible instead, since you're running Nvidia driver rather than Nouveau.
    To be honest, I find its presence surprising because I thought it was still in active development and not ready yet for official deployment.

    Re: 14.10 Freezes During Shutdown

    A trace has recently shown up during a failed shutdown; the following is the OCR translation obtained from a picture (available as attachment), meaning some decoding errors may be still there, especially in the "Modules linked in" section that I have not checked:

    wait-for-state stop/waiting

    * speech-dispatcher disabled; edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher
    * Stopping uuidd generator uuidd

    Nouveau is clearly involved in the bug.
