Keyboard shortcuts to generate a character and not to launch a program

I assume that am not the first to think of using the \Setting manager\keyboard shortcuts feature as a character generator, rather than to launch a program? Is this possible? What I tried returned with:
Failed to execute child process "—" (No such file or directory)

Not a command! I just specified a character and tied it to a key combination. I don't wish you to waste your time. Please don't suggest the composer. By now, I am full aware of the traditional methods of character entry.
