Guidance WRT commercial code development containing GNU GPL code

I am wondering / looking for a simple reference with regards to how I can develop commercial products that incorporate GNU GPL or other open source code.
I posted something similar in the security forum as I saw a commercial product built around a GNU GPL base.

Appreciate any direction.
