Yes my mac uses EFI and I've got a small partition on my mac that is called "EFI boot" I can only see it though when I watch it with gparted or disks from Ubuntu, it is the /dev/sda1 parition, I also tried installing the bootloader there but to no avail. Yes I've also tried the "Something else option" and chose the internal drive as the traget device for the boot loader and got the same result.
