thunderbird pulldown menus disappear when moving pointer over selection

I have a new build of 14.04 on my laptop using gnome-shell with an NVIDIA GTX 870M. I have tried all the 3rd party drivers, and am having an issue with pulldown menus in thunderbird. When I hover the pointer over the menu selections, the menu disappears. I can't figure out what is going on. Other programs like pidgn seem to work OK.
Any thoughts on how to fix this or what may be going on?

After playing a bit, I've found that the issue seems to be related to window focus. If I use mouse or sloppy focus in tweak-tool, I have the issue, If I use click for window focus, there is no problem.

Any ideas how to fix this? I really like mouse focus.
