A lot of hard work has been done by a few people and based upon my last night updated install of Ubuntu Mate it is starting to look like a quality OS and is working well.
Now, is the time for all those who think that Ubuntu 10.10 was the best Ubuntu version ever to get involved with this project.
It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

Choice is good. I recently virtual machined the MATE version of Linux Mint. Not bad but, as a DE, the whole Gnome 2 thing is getting pretty long in the tooth these days and, I've been using xfce (Xubuntu) for quite some time.
I do think that Ubuntu with Mate will be a welcome addition to the *buntu family.
Great news. I use MATE (1.6 still) occasionally on an old laptop (on top of Debian Wheezy) and it surprises me how nice it is to use Gnome 2. Not that I want it on my main, quite powerful, desktop but a great alternative to have. Especially for older hardware.
Hmmmm...
Mubuntu ...
That would be great, and the mascot could be a dairy cow.

This universe is crazy. I'm going back to my own.
With the MATE spin's emphasis on the retro-Ubuntu look, some folks might think that it's running on 10.04-era code. Of course, it's 14.10.
And you can install and choose themes as you see fit, if you don't like the default look. (Hafta say, though, I like their rendition of Ambiance better than Unity's.) In any case, in the last install I did the default Ambiance theme looked very modern, not at all like I remember Ubuntu in 2011.
They also created a PPA hosting MATE 1.8 for 14.04. Works just fine.
I use mate on everything. its great for me.
The only dumb question is the one not asked.

Ubuntu 10.10 was a solid release for me. The changes that came with Ubuntu 11.04 prompted me to look for alternatives. I've used Kubuntu as my main OS ever since.
I saw the smiley but the I think the Technical Board will not approve any more *buntu names hence the naming of Ubuntu GNOME and Ubuntu Kylin.
