Ubuntu desktop not working

Greetings all!
First of all i would like to apologize,i am a new ubuntu user and to the forums as well so any tips would be really appreciated
Ok so i have been using ubuntu for 4 months i think.
I was always using the ubuntu desktop but one week ago i logged in and there was nothing! No icons,i tried some tips i found online but nothing worked.
Anyway,at the login screen i choosed to use the gnome desktop (it has two options if i am not mistaken) they both work fine,but the ubuntu one does not.
Sadly thats my favourite so i was wondering if someone could help me with this matter.
Forgot to mention that i have the 14.04 version.

Before this happened, did you update a graphics card driver? Also, what graphics card do you have?

Nope i did not.
It is a Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset

When you logged in and there was nothing, was it a black screen, or just no icons?

Edit: Also, what model computer is this?

No there was no Black screen,just no icons,also when i was right clicking i could see the options and i also try to create a new folder and the new icon would appear but just that.
It is a Lenovo G530 4446.Thanks again

Could you have accidently moved the folders when in file manager? If you can remember what was there maybe try to do a search to see if they can be located.

Oh no i did not do something like that.What i wanted to say is that when i saw that there is nothing on my desktop i tried to see what would happen if i would create a new folder and i was actually surprised that i could see the new icon of the folder i created.Thank you for your reply

Can you open a terminal (Press Ctrl. + Alt. + T) and type in the following:

cat ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs

and tell us the results of that? (Please post code under [code]code tags[/code])

Hello Jonathan and thank you for your reply! Ok i was going to do what you suggested and i was notified that i had to install some updates which i did ,anyway i logged out from the Gnome desktop and i logged in to the Ubuntu one and everything was there! I have no idea why but it should be something with the updates perhaps?
Anyway my problem is solved quite unexpectedly but works for me!
