Package System Broken ?

Raggylad; Welp:

Not a major obstacle.
In the liveDVD insure the universe and multiverse repositories are enabled;
install testdisk:

sudo apt-get install testdisk

else for extended use one might consider downloading and burning the bootable testdisk CD.
Then again, Windows may have the tools on-board to repair the file system, here I am unqualified to offer guidance.

The issues which were explored in this thread, while not having been resolved, have been bypassed for me by achieving a fresh install as a true dual boot (Windows Vista and Trusty). The full story is over on this thread:

With many thanks to all who have helped me - in particular @Bashing-om, @Kansasnoob and @ian-weisser. I have learned a great deal more about Linux and Ubuntu in the process.
