very poor export quality with dia

Using Lubuntu 14.04 64bit and dia-normal 0.97.2 I am facing very poor quality when trying to export a diagram to .png or .jpeg (see attachment). Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

I create the diagram and use the export dialog File>Export selecting the option Cairo png (*.png) under export options.

So between some letter pairs the horizontal displacement is missing, causing characters to overlap. That must be a problem with the font rendering, but I can't help you with that. The tiny bit that I can help you with is saying that in general converting line drawings/diagrams to jpeg is a bad idea. Jpeg gives severe compression artefacts when dealing with sharp edges. Png handles it nicely.
