Cinnamon won't load wallpaper

I have 14.04 installed and am running this on a 13" 2013 macbook pro. I just installed cinnamon and love it but the wallpaper that is displayed with it is something that would come with the original windows 3.1. It's some tiles and looks like it's only supposed to load if there's a problem. I've tried downloading another theme and switching to it, everything changes EXCEPT the wallpaper.

And I just noticed that the menu bar is gone from my windows. "File Edit View," it's nonexistent on cinnamon. It's been a long day maybe I just missed something.

The only way I could get good looking wallpaper up with cinnamon was by loading ubuntu regular desktop and doing a cinnamon --replace. The application ended up crashing my computer and I'm uninstalling it now.

So don't bother solving this one.
