Problem booting after hardware stack upgrade

I received a warning about something concerning my hardware stack going out of support and warning me to upgrade. After I did and rebooted, my computer will not boot properly. When it goes to boot, it gives an error about some file rt1wifi/rt18188efw.bin or something like that, and then flashes a "Broken Pipe" message and ceases to boot. I Googled the file and found a fix for it which I am currently going through (I am able to boot through Recovery Mode, and everything except wifi seems to work when I do that), but I'm wondering about not being able to finish the boot sequence. Any ideas?

Re: Problem booting after hardware stack upgrade

After fixing the wifi issue according to the walkthrough, the computer boots fine and cursory usage appears to indicate that everything is fine. However, it boots noticeably slower than it used to, and I do not get the Ubuntu splash screen on boot or shutdown anymore. Is this an issue?
