What if you were denied insurance because you searched for cancer treatments? What if you were denied a job because you visited a porn site? What if you were put on a no-fly list for visiting an "extremist" website? The list of possible abuses of the data that is collected about you is staggering.
Do you have any hard data beyond anecdotes to prove that insurance companies might deny you medical coverage based on random searches of cancer treatments?

    how about let's not
Death was standing behind a lectern, poring over a map. He looked at Mort as if he wasn't entirely there.
You haven't heard of the Bay of Mante, have you? he said.
    'No, sir,' said Mort.
    'Famous shipwreck there.'
    'Was there?'
'There will be', said Death, 'if I can find the damn place.'

No real point debating that either.

mooreted has a point though. They tried to blackmail Martin Luther King when he was having an affair. Today that might seem like a minor transgression, but remember that was back in the 60's, so you can imagine what position they put him into. Therefore it's not inconceivable that the government would use your private internet search activity against you, for instance if you've visited adult sites, not saying anyone here does, but it's a possibility. History would certainly indicate that they would. mooreted I'm not sure if I understand your last post.

Yeah, to me it's being careful, not paranoid. I have no way of knowing who is collecting what data and how that data is used. The only way to secure against a threat is knowing what the threat is. All I can really do is reduce my risk by not letting them get the data in the first place.

My life is boring, I don't do anything illegal as far as I know, but it's sill my life and I get to choose what I share and what I don't.
