I haven't used Unity for a while, but you can try [Alt + Tab] to switch between open windows. If you know the name of the app that is acting up, for example: "crazyapp2;" then try this in a Terminal [Ctrl + Alt + T] Now, if you don't know the name of the app, you can try in the terminal and get a good guess as to which one(s) on the list you would like to kill. P.S. I had the same problem in Unity, but now I use LXDE because my olde PC won't keep up (I can't say what your problem is for sure).
