    Recommend USB Wi-Fi Adapter

I am looking for a USB Wi-Fi adapter. It's for a spare PC I'd like to setup to stream 1080p contents to.
    Can anyone recommend one?

    Must be USB

I'm after 801.11ac idealy, 801.11n minimum. (My router is 801.11n but plan on an upgrade)

Just works as soon as I install Ubuntu. if it's 801.11ac I'd look at installing the drivers myself but I'd prefer one thats supported by the Kernal, or is defenalally going to be pulled into the kernal for future support.

    Reghards,
    Lee

    Re: Recommend USB Wi-Fi Adapter......

Making recommendations for USB Wifi devices comes with a bit of risk. Some manufacturers change chip sets without changing model numbers. They'll add something like v.2 or v.B but there's typically no way to determine that without looking at the device's label. Dlink seems IMO to be particularly prone to this. I have no experience with 802.11AC though I think there might be a couple 'plug 'n' play' devices available. I have a few USB wifi devices but most of them are N150, not especially fast. Of the devices I have, I think Trendnet TEW-649UB is probably the fastest. It's rated at 300 Mb./sec. down, 150 Mb./sec up. It uses a RealTek RTL8192SU chipset which seems to be well supported by linux without having to add PPAs or any other messing about.

    Re: Recommend USB Wi-Fi Adapter

I have read about manufacturers changing chip sets and understand that this happens, also seen afew incomplete hardware compatibility websites with recomendation for old hardware.
I'm not really a fan of D-Link (family member had a bad router in the past and I maintained there PC's...).
Thanks for recomending your Trednet device, I'll look into where to get it & the price...

Are there any others people would recomend / use themselves?

Has anyone sucessfully used any of the following?

    Edimax EW-7622UMn - £10.07
    Edimax EW-7722UTn - £11.27
    Edimax EW-7612UAn - £11.98
    Netgear WNA3100 N300 - £12.67
    Linksys AE1200-EU - £13.34
    Linksys AE2500-EU - £16.43
    Edimax EW-7811UTC AC600 - £16.45
    TP-Link TL-WDN3200 N600 - £17.98
    Sitecom wl18273300072 - £19.19
    Asus USB-N53 90-IG1Y002M00-0PA0- - £23.44
    Linksys AE6000-EU - £24.67
    Linksys AE3000-EU - £25.84
    Edimax EW-7822UAC AC1200 - £28.94

They are from a local store, that has been great with returns in the past, so if I purchase the incorrect version then I shouldn't have too much trouble exchanging it.

    Re: Recommend USB Wi-Fi Adapter

I'm thinking I may just purchase the Edimax EW-7622UMn for £10.07 if it's plug n play with Ubuntu and other distro's.
I can always upgrade to an 801.11ac version later when I get a new router. Hopefully the price would have come down and the will be a good plug n play option then.

Can anyone confirm the Edimax EW-7622UMn works?

It's good if you can buy from a store since, like you said, you can return. But, you might be able to save some time by looking at the revision number on the box. Usually, it will be in fine print someplace.

That adapter should work okay? I think this site is good for figuring out info for the chipset and drivers needed:

    RTL8192SU for that one?

With non-free sources enabled, I think you make sure the realtek firmware is installed and configure your connection.
