UBUNTU 14 updates fails... (but not really)

When Ubuntu automatically tells me there is an Update avaiable, I click to "download" it. It goes through the normal process and at the end, I get a "pop-up box" that says:

"PACKAGE OPERATION FAILED. The installation or removal of the software package failed"

At that point, I click "ok."

I can immediately go to the "software updater" and manually ask it to look for updates and it tells me the computer is already up to date... this doesn't seem like a huge problem, but it is quite annoying as I want to be sure that the "updates" actually update!

    thanks,

    JAY
