Error updating: Not enough space in Boot Partition

I get an error that I don't have enough space in my boot partition when I update.

What can I delete safely? Older versions before update?

    Boot space is only 256MB.

See how many kernels you've got installed and remove older ones.

Why do you have a /boot partition? why have you left it so long to deal with a filling up /boot partition?
