maybe right click the item in the menu and click add to panel
The only dumb question is the one not asked.
In service to the Dream
Search for it, and drag and drop it into the unity panel. Hope this helps.
If you mean the top bar in Unity I don't think it's possible, but Firefox should be in the Launcher on the left by default.
Or are you using a different desktop environment?
If you are using Unity and if you mean the Unity Launcher open Dash> search for the application > Drag the application icon to the Launcher. This works if it is an application installed by Synaptic, Software Center, or Gdebi. If it's an application you configured from source code take a look here>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLeMbsI_rn4
I don't think you can add an application to the taskbar unless it's written into the program to add a shortcut to the taskbar.
Sorry that i did not describe it detailed enough.
I use the unity desktop and i actually mean the top bar where i can see the time, the wifi connection applet, the shutdown options etc.
Actually i extremely hate the unity dash bar located on the left side, because it wastes the space available on my "small" notebook monitor. Thats why i have configured it to be hidden and activated when I go to the left corner with my mouse.
In other desktop environments like xfce or cinnamon (cinnamon known from linux mint) i can add programms (like firefox) to the top bar panel right next to the location where i can see my wifi symbol (from standard ubuntu unity installation). In this case i dont need the annoying unity dash located on the left side, because i can access all my programs from the top bar.
I know that I can easily add programms like firefox to that panel in Xubuntu. But it does not work on Ubuntu unity. And i dont want to change the desktop to the one that is used in kubuntu, ubuntu-gnome, lubuntu, xubuntu etc.
So is there an other way to add a few programs like firefox etc to the top bar in Ubuntu unity?
Thanks in advance for any support

You could use ClassicMenu Indicator
That'll put all your apps in Unity's menu bar. There is also "Drawers". This adds the ability to add multiple apps, web links, whatever you want to the unity launcher itself. Or, you could just use a different DE altogether like xfce, mate or kde.
