Does an MMO (or RPG in general) exist like this?

Just curious, I've only played a few RPGs in my life (such as Morrowind), and the only MMO I've played is the lord of the rings online, but I've always wondered one question. Is there an RPG out there that does away with the traditional "leveling" system and uses some other form of system for advancement?

I don't mean anything in specific; that is actually my problem, I can't really think of another more logical way to show progress to the player other than a simple math-based leveling approach.

I've just been wondering if there are any out there, especially MMO's, and how they work. My idea is that if a game did away with the traditional leveling system, then it would have to compensate majorly somehow. It would have to be equally as rewarding yet not have a "if you kill this mob, then you gain this many experience points which in turn makes you level up to level 2 of 50" or something along those lines. It would focus on other areas, for example more focus on the combat system, or on the gear/cosmetics, or more on the story/plot, so forth.

they do it by upgrading weapons. bigger better stronger...

eg something like stalker series mix of FPS, adventure and RPG. the further you progress the stronger weapons (though not always better) you find. it still leaves you to use diferent branches as some use NATO ammo, some use russian ammo etc. since your carry weight is limited you need to decide what you Will carry. rocket launcer will be very heavy for example yet powerfull.

I think Far cry does something like that as well (haven't played beyond first edition since i have old mashcine).

Another one is Boiling point (if you play it make sure you fully patch it otherwise it is a really bad game). as you progress through the story you get licence to drive other vehicles, you find sellers with better stronger weapons (but they are not some uber weapons). so your personal skill in handling situation, finding cover, some tactics etc is always at play.

i don't know how latest GTA games do it. previous did use some kind of math, though you didn't have to kill mobs to get imporvements.

also, have you played Minecraft yet?

MMO's are basically more or less the same. comabt is actually quite static. it has to be like that to accomodate all the players on servers and account for lags etc.

Ah, ok. Yea I never thought about GTA or Minecraft. I guess in GTA you don't really get stronger or acquire "skills", if anything you maybe access some new gear and vehicles, and unlock other parts of the map, and acquire money. No leveling really. And minecraft is very simple, there's really no advancement. You can just build and build to your hearts desire ad infinitum.

Not sure about the other games you mentioned since I've ever played them. But yea that makes sense about MMO's, didn't think about server lag and all that.

There's Borderlands 2, which might come out for Linux, which is best described as a first-person Diablo, in which you constantly upgrade weapons gathered as loot. The character doesn't level up.

You can get new ability by unlocking skill tree, there are many to choose from.

This is for one playable character (what i play), there are others that have different skill tree.

re: diablo games - what do you mean without real levelling? you do have levels but they are class specific. but you do have levels and specialisation. e.g. cold mage, hot mage...

Be warned, though. It seems somewhat unstable on Linux compared to the Windows client. I was getting a random crash about every other hour so.

Played the game. Moving is little difficult, you need to use wasd key + mouse right click to get char to the direction you need. If you press a key, char won't auto face to that direction, you need to use mouse to face char to that direction. I prefer the way we control player character in FTS like battlefield, TF2 etc.. Player models, most have no dress (nude), it may be due to my GPU can't handle the graphics properly.
