    Kernel panic

    Hi,

    Absolute linux noob here. I recently replaced Windows 8 with Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop (Asus rog g750jw). It has been giving me this weird problem since yesterday: it just hangs up randomly, the screen freezes, the caps lock and num lock indicators go crazy and blink as if the laptop is having some sort of seizure. I don't find linux exactly beginner friendly,so I would really appreciate some help here. Thanks

    According to the symptoms, it's probably kernel panic. In case you want someone to try and help, provide info on what causes it, and when it happans, hardware specs, logs, such as /var/log/dmesg.

    Most likely it is a kernel panic

    However one should not rule out overheating as a possible cause

    The hang up happens randomly - it has no particular occasion. Last time, it happened while I was watching a youtube video on firefox and before that it happened while I was working with MATLAB. I am not sure what exactly causes it.

    Kernel panic :( Please help...

    I recently replaced Windows 8 with Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop (Asus rog g750jw). My system recently started freezing up for no apparent reason (the caps lock and num lock indicators blink indefinitely when that happens). A quick google search and replies to this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2227134 indicate that it might be kernel panic. I have no idea what might be causing it and how to fix it.     I would highly reccomend running a memtest. this can be found in the boot menu of almost all linux distros or live cd/flash menus. With ubuntu press escape on boot when you see press esc to load grub menu, or control+alt+delete during boot shoud force the grub menu on next boot, with the live image press escape when you see the little man equals keyboard and select memtest86. let it run until all test have 100% completed, no red lines is good ram, red error lines means it's bad, and that's your problem.

    What you are describing does indeed sound like a kernel panic wich is likely caused by a bad secondary stick of ram. Usually if it's the primary ram slot you won't even make it through boot. Only way to know for sure is pulling the ram and replacing it if there is only one stick or running a memtest(best option since a lot of new laptops have the ram solders to the board, stupid). The other option would be a bad hard drive or sectors on the drive. Either way this is likely a hardware issue not software and ram sounds right as the proccesses you have described, flash player and matlab are both ram intensive. In my case I was able to pull the secondary stick and everything worked after that, run a memtest first though.
