can't upgrade from 8.04LT to anything else

I had windows xp on this pc and deleted it to 14.04 but it wouldn't install. I could not reinstall xp which I do not want. All I could do was install my old disc for Ubuntu 8.04.It works but can't update to anything. If I put in the 14.04 32 bit it just keeps opening 8.04 from the hard drive after it tries to open the 14.04 disc. Any suggestions on how to fix?

    chicoharv2; Well, Well ....

There is a means to upgrade from release 8.04 but is is highly NOT-recommended. Way too much has changed - even to get to 12.04. But, there is a possibility that it might make the transitions:
8.04 -> 10.04 ->12.04 Long Term Support to Long Term Support to Long Term Support. Even if it works is a lot of TIME and bandwidth.
    Howto:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades
    Pay attention to page 2.

How old is the hardware ? Now-days it takes the horse-power to run the flag ship edition of (u)buntu.
Minimum specs: - 2 gigs of ram is recommned for a good experience with good hardware:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...emRequirements

What might be the better course is to see if we can get release 14.04 installed, perhaps as a different flavor ( lubuntu ?)
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/GetLubuntu

If that box will run XP, it will run 'buntu !

    maybe yes
maybe not so yes for (u)buntu

Re: can't upgrade from 8.04LT to anything else

Well it won;t run my xp anymoreas it was the xp pro and my recovery disc wants a xp home edition which I don't have. I tried to update to 10.4 but it isn'tdoing anything. Has the kernal changed that much that I am in a catch 32 or grub. My hp is about 8 years old and is 32 i 386. I also tried to install Ubuntu 13,but it doesn't work either. Any other ideas?

    chicoharv2; Hey;

Just a thought, that CPU is not PAE enabled:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2211590 <-Now 14.04 Lubuntu has support for non-pae:

    For the work-a-round.

You should carry on trying to download Lubuntu. Ubuntu is not a good choice for hardware from the XP era.

PAE is not a problem here. If it were then you would have received an explicit message about it. In general there's too much talk about PAE in Ubuntuforums.
Bringing old hardware back to life. About problems due to upgrading.

Don't use this space for a list of your hardware. It only creates false hits in the search engines.

Magic ISO has nothing to do with it. You just need to make a live usb with something like unetbootin or http://www.linuxliveusb.com/
