Do not discard dnsmasq so easily... It is a very nice peace of caching-SW... Easy to set up and delightful to use...

I am of the thinking that this may be on again - off again throughout this cycle, so, thats a good fix when it breaks up the road so to speak.

Interestingly I'm also getting issues with pkexec. It doesn't launch a graphical appliction for me and after entering my password in the terminal it closes without giving an error message.

It works for me with the newer kernel but still gets an error.

Oh well at least it works.

nano is easy to use, probably your best bet.
In the few cases where gedit is more suitable pkexec should be ok how did you set it up?
(if you followed the post in closed thread it should have been put in a code box & there is a spelling error, <annotate key="org.freedesktop.policykit.exec.allow_gui">tru e</annotate>, that should be true, not tru e

Also better to run a root gedit or nautilus from run command than from terminal..

    Re: broken gksu

I get *so* fed up with the ubuntu centric point of view

So - I get a massive error with gksudo gedit - if I try to run it - it want's it installed

No way I'm doing that either - that wants me to install zeitgeist

    No pkexec for mousepad either
