Is it possible to get virus by copying contents of dvd in a folder?

Suppose I have an old dvd (purchased from a store) containing movies and to keep backup of those I insert it in the dvd drive and assuming the drive can read the contents, I copy the contents in a folder in my computer. Later I want to write these on a blank dvd. My doubt is, I do not know if the dvd itself is infected or not so that by copying the contents, the system may get infected with virus. Is that possible, especially in ubuntu 12.04? I had a very bad experience of infecting my windowsXP long ago by using my pen (flash) drive first in an infected windows computer and later in my onw computer.

No, you can't. I did malware research for years and have about 4TB worth of malware samples sitting on my ZFS array. Malware is simply a piece of software. It has to be executed by the system to work. It's perfectly safe copying files even on a windows system. Your previous windows system got infected because of autorun executing the malware.
