Problem solved!
All (sarcasm there) it took was to launch an xfce session instead of the default Unity.
See the attached screenshot - my Sony Walkman is once again behaving like a file based system
As a bonus, most of the other slight annoyances I had experienced seem to have vanished as well.XFCE-Walkman.png
