Not shutting down properly, unable to stop porcesses

I just place Ubuntu on an older Lenovo 3000 C200 that was running Xp. I wiped the drive and chose to just install directly. Everything seems to be working fine, until i click shutdown, then it either goes to the black screen and i get a few ok's and a "Fail" on terminating processes, or it goes to the "ubuntu splash screen" and just hangs there until i manually power down the machine.
