How do I add to the launcher

OK, I am really trying to like the Unity interface but I am far more accustomed to the Gnome/kde type. I have just installed 14.04 on my laptop and want to add Thunderbird to the launcher. How do you do this. It is installed but I don't see any mechanism for adding programs like this. I may well add the Gnome shell to his installation. Any views?

In unity just launch thunderbird from the dash seach, right click its icon after it launches, and click 'lock to launcher'

I have 14.04 32bit and that doesn't work. What does work is find your programin dash-Click and drag it to the launcher.

    Ah, thanks - I'm still a 12.04 stick-in-the-mud.

Just tried a 14.04 live cd and both methods worked for me.
