Sound not working 12.04

My friend's computer (HP Pavilion a6502f Desktop PC) has recently stopped producing audio for YouTube video. I tried going into ALSA settings to see if sound was muted; it was not. I tried a few fixes and then thought to try a LIVEUSB of 14.04 and there still was no audio. So now I think it is a hardware problem on the motherboard. I am wondering if one of THESE would replace the audio function of the motherboard and get sound working again.
Anyone use one of these devices?
