Re: Installing windows 7 or 8 along side Ubuntu 12.04 installation
First of all, there is no straightforward way to "upgrade" to Win7 or Win8 from XP, MS does not support this. So basically, you will have to reinstall all your apps.
Second, you will need to preallocate some disk space before installing as Windows does not understand Linux filesystems. To do that, boot from Ubuntu install media, select Gparted, and shrink your Linux filesystem by 40GB. When that's done, create an NTFS partition in the new space.
Third, when you install Windows, use the option to reformat the NTFS partition -- this is important.
Fourth, when done, Windows will have overwritten your MBR so you will have to reinstall GRUB: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...tallingWindows
Ubuntu 14.04, Mint 17; MS Win 8.1.
Will not respond to PM requests for support -- use the forums.
