Do Not Want social media integration

Would it be possible to have a user option to disable all social media integration in this forum?

I live behind the Great Firewall of China. This means, every time a site tries to use "connect.facebook.com" or "platform.twitter.com," I have to sit there for an additional 20-60 seconds (sometimes longer) to wait for those connection attempts to get killed before the browser will show me ANYTHING. Here on ubuntuforums.org, every attempt to view a thread tries to call connect.facebook.com... every time. I don't need the feature and it costs me time.

For the most part, I just have to accept that this is a fact of life -- only partly about living in China, but also about web developers who just assume that everybody in the world will have no problem getting to those sites. Sometimes I can accept it... sometimes I feel compelled to remind site administrators that this "convenience" is very much not helpful in some parts of the world.

    Thanks,
    hjh

    Hello!

If you use Firefox, you can add the NoScript addon. With that, you can pick and choose what you want to show up. You can forbid facebook.net and facebook.com to keep those elements from attempting to make connections.

    Cheers!

If you find NoScript a bit complicated, you can also block sites with AdBlock Plus. I don't think there's much to gain, at least in the foreseeable future, by hoping site admins or page designers will make "social-free" sites.

If you need help with AdBlock Plus, ask a specific question in the support section and people will be happy to help

As above, I use both of those Firefox add-ons and never see facebook buttons.

I use the disconnect addon in Chromium, I don't see any social media icons.

    Hi Dewdrop_world,

It's not just the Great Wall of China.

I live in a remote part of Australia where internet is expensive and slow.

Ever since Google, Facebook and Youtube tried this stupid cross-link/cross-login rubbish many websites just aren't worth waitng for any more.

Sorry I'm of no help to you but you're not alone.

    Cheers,

    Andrew.

I use the Ghostery add-on to Firefox. I just turned off "Facebook Connect" in the Ghostery manager after visiting this site, and that took care of Facebook. I haven't tried NoScript for a while now, but the last time I used it, I got tired of its constant nagging.

Why do we have unethical crap like this on Ubuntuforums anyway?
