Hello,
I'd go with lubuntu or xubuntu.

joe103; Hi !
+1 on lubuntu, just 'cause i am prejudiced .
PAE, Physical Address Extension:
A guide for getting computers with older Pentium M processors to work with the latest Lubuntu;

Now 14.04 Lubuntu has support for non-pae:

that is what I think
If it's only eight years old there's no PAE problem. Also all 3 GHz processors support PAE.
Joe, just install. No worries here.

256, is this the amount of memory of the graphics card? In my opinion, with Ubuntu Unity we might get by with 512MB but 1GB is better still.256 agp 3d card
It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

Sometimes that's confusing. In an Oracle Virtualbox VM Ubuntu 14.04 works perfectly with 128 MB video memory allocated. It isn't exactly 3D or effects that you get, of course. But Dash, semitransparent, appears quickly. And by the way that machine has only 1280 MB internal memory.

No problems with Lubuntu, of course, but on the (VM) machine I'm using I started the openoffice writer, a terminal with htop and the firefox browser for a usage of 590 MB internal memory. No swap. So I added the java application freemind. 680 MB. A game? Battle of Wesnoth, 760 MB. No swap, the machine runs normal and fast.
I think we should let the debate rest for a while until original poster returns.
