Building development destop .. planning to run ubuntu.. questions.

    Hey Guys,

I am planning to build a machine which I will be using for C++/Java development. I will be doing browsing and youtube but will not be gaming.

I wanted to find out if the following configuration is compatible with ubuntu distributions:

    CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K
    RAM: 16 or 32 GB
    MotherBoard:
    Gigabyte GA-B85M - B85 chipset - LGA1150(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128607)
    Asus Z87-A LGA1150 - Z87 chipset - LGA1150(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131981)

    Video card/GPU:
Not sure yet may be in future, currently planning to use inbuilt cpu video

    USB2.0 and 3.0

    Hard Drive:
    SSD 120 GB or higher

    Thanks in advance.

Not exactly the same, one is MicroATX and the other ATX. So what case are you planning?
And a micro ATX case may not support much in the way of video cards.

Not too many have posted with motherboards.

Thank you for your response, I am planning to with ASUS ... form factor ATX.

so if ubuntu 14.04 is very stable on asrock Z87 that means I should not have any issues on the ASUS Z87 chipset

What do you mean MicroATX case may not support video cards ? meaning the micro atx case is smaller in size ?

    Thanks.

    Shows sizes.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATX

I think that you may be able to use a smaller motherboard in a larger case, but I have only built full ATX systems with standard desktop cases.
But in the reviews there is discussion about some mini or mico cases not having room for larger fans or full height video cards. And usually not as much room for hard drives or only 2.5 not 3.5 size.
Often smaller boards have fewer memory slots, or fewer add-in card slots.

Yup, I just read the diff between an ATX and micro ATX and yes the cases are smaller and so the boards. I want to go the ATX route.

My other question was, do I have to have a video card ? I am planning to install more than one monitors 2 to start with .. the motherboard already has a VGA port and a DVI port but lets say in future if I want to install a third monitor then can do I have to have a video card for it ? I can use split-ers

    Thanks.

Do not know about mulitple monitors. I would think a splitter just shows the same info on two screens.

Some older links, but I have seen a lot of questions on mulitple monitors. It may require some manual configuration?

This is a success story for installing 3 ATI Firepro 2260's and 1 Radeon HD 5870 in the same computer.

Thanks for the links, when I say multiple screens.. there are more than one screen and all screens together behave as one single screen.

I have three screens at my work place and I use a one DVI to two DVI socket splitter. Its like one to many dvi socket. "many" dvi connectors connect to these multiple sockets and all these end up to one connector that connects to the dvi port on the desktop. When the machine boots.. the mouse and keyboard move seamlessly across all screens.

My latest build has 16 GB and this has been more than sufficient for very heavy usage, the extra 16 GB in your build might very well be superfluous...
