Bill Gates bought the rights for DOS from another comnpany - I believe Seattle Computer Products - who it was originally developed by, then Microsoft continued development on it:

Hehe I love how MS made their big success by buying an OS called QDOS (quick and dirty OS) and the licensing it to ibm when they made their PC.

they were there at the right place and the right time. Microsoft's early success really came from their implementation of BASIC.

DOS is a style of operating system. There are multiple varieties of DOS, like Apple-DOS (which got dropped with the introduction of the Mac, IIRC), FreeDOS, and MS-DOS. Microsoft didn't initially develop MS-DOS, but they maintained it after buying it.

ProDOS ran on Apples. I have an Apple IIgs. It has Applesoft Basic (Which was actually under license from Microsoft) on the ROM and disks with GUI-Based GS/OS. It also was the first system that ran GNO/ME!
I've got to admit, it's getting better.
