In the past you typically needed to use a special "crossover" Ethernet cable to connect machines directly. Those cables connect the transmit pins on one machine to the receive pins on the other, and vice versa. However modern network adapters have an "auto-sensing" ability to detect which pair of connectors should be used. I'd give your regular Ethernet cable a try and see if it works. If not, you need to buy a
crossover cable.
To copy the files, I'd choose rsync. If neither machine has openssh-server installed, you might want to do that first.
Hi
Performed following steps:
PC1 Ubuntu 12.04
Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 10.1.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 10.1.1.255
PC2
Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 10.1.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 10.1.1.255
Connected 2 PCs with a router cable
PC1 can ping PC2 and vice versa
On PC1 ran
Code:
rsync -r -a -v -e "ssh -l satimis" Temp_Storage/* 10.1.1.2:/home/satimis/Temp_Storage/
Files copied. Thanks
Rgds
