Unhappy Error: Can't allocate initial device-tree chunk

Hi,

I just bought an iMac G3 at a garage sale and I want to install xubuntu 6.06 power pc on it. I've downloaded the ISO, burned it, booted the cd, gotten to the prompt where *live is the default. Shortly therafter I get a gray screen:

Code:
Can't allocate initial device-tree chunk

Apple iMac Open Firmware 3.0 f2 build on 04/23/99 at 14:31:03
Copyrught 1994-1999 Apple Computer, Inc.

I've tried every option available from pressing tab, including `live video=ofonly` to no avail. The machine has 160 megabytes of ram and is a G3 233 MHZ, 4 gigabyte harddrive classic bubly blue iMac from the late 90's, boots into the included Mac OS 8 with no problems.

Help?

Re: Error: Can't allocate initial device-tree chunk

you´re not alone in the world, i have the same problem. it seems the grey screen is the "firmware promt " of the imac, not the installation promp. see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/PowerPC. try typing "boot cd:,\\:tbxi"

Hi, thanks for tip but unfortunately it didn't work. The following is a transcription of what happens:

Code:
0 > boot cd:,\\:tbxi load-size=73f adler32=80dda6b0

parsing <CHRP-BOOT>

evaluating <BOOT-SCRIPT>

DEFAULT CATCH!. code=300 at %SRR0: 016dd1c %SRR1: 0000b030
 ok

Thereafter, nothing.

Any other ides?

Re: Error: Can't allocate initial device-tree chunk

I read those links, searched for hours, but nothing seems to solve my problem. I have filled a bug report.

Unhappy Re: Error: Can't allocate initial device-tree chunk

Hi all! (1st post!)

Same problem. I have a clamshell iBook 300mhz with 288mb ram. It has 5.10 installed, but won't auto-upgrade for some reason

I've burnt both the 6.06 'desktop' and 'alternate' ISOs so now have two new coasters

Being a n00b to linux, I was well impressed when I heard I may be able to have hardware accelerated graphics again... Something Mac OS X has left me feeling a bit miffed since upgrading from System 9. Seeing what 4mb of VRAM can do is better than nothing!

Is there an official thread about this. Like the others here, I've found loads of separate threads about pre-release problems all mixed up with current installer difficulties.

Re: Error: Can't allocate initial device-tree chunk

I am also having this paicular problem. I am on an iMac G3 Rev D. 333 mhz with 160 mb ram an i have tried the xubuntu 6.06 desktop release and the xubuntu 6.06 alternate with no help either. I think this may be some sort of hardware limitation that resides in the kernel, similar to how this paticular model (tray loads) cant run anything higher than 10.3.9. it is very strange indeed.
