Been using Freya for several months, and love it because of Pantheon. However, despite understanding why eOS develops its own apps (read: forks), I still don't agree with the decision, as I'm sure it drains developers' time/resources that could be spent on the DE.
I've tried all the apps (except Music, b/c VLC), and they just feel too simple compared to more popular alternatives. OS X is famous for its apps because they're good at what they do....but eOS's apps are too simple...I know they want eOS to feel like a "unified" OS theme wise, but nobody's going to use Midori because it fits the eOS aesthetic lol.
That said, Pantheon is great because it has elements from Unity/GNOME without the downsides (full screen for all app view wtf)
ps: That said, eOS doesn't reinvent the wheel in any shape/form, as GNOME can be easily modded to look similer to Pantheon, but I still like it
